Pianola Ripples
2018
Pianola Ripples complicates the techniques and processes of musical notation and photography by feeding them through the pianola. Videos of moving water hold place in a series of images. These were combined and printed as stills to make a graphic image of the waters, which was then carefully sliced to make a pianola roll (Ripples Pianola Roll). The pianola performance of the roll was then videoed (Ripples Score) and its visual image used as a musical score (Ripples Score). The first performance of the score was recorded on a set of the Federation bells by Michael Roper.(Ripples Bells) In the second he uses the piano to translate the same score, with sounds that more closely relate to the pianola recording. (Ripples Piano)
For the installation, these 3 works were overlaid to produce a trio composition of piano, pianola and bells. The overlaying projection of video reinvested the installation with its generating imagery, and acted as a conductor for the continuous performance.
