Settle Down

2023

This chair has been passed down through many generations of Blacket’s and is in need of repair. The refurbishment is a tradition each generation has undertaken, which requires reflection into the debt we owe to the past and our position in the current era. How do we settle this score when the burdens of colonization make it simpler to forget? How do I keep this immigrant history with its roses and pansies and speak, instead of local landscapes I know and love?

Materials: Antique chair, feathers (collected from Bayside beaches), coat hanger wire, bicycle spokes, buttons, tulle, nail polish, permanent marker
